MUSIC WORKSHOP
Bluop! - a SonicPlay™ Session for Babies & their Adults
LittleCr3atures®
Birth - 18 months 23 Feb 25 (Sun)
Programme Content

Listening and making sounds are crucial for our little ones' social and emotional development. From birth, children interact with sounds through everyday objects and naturally want to communicate with adults. Psychologist Colwyn Trevarthen, through his theory of intersubjectivity, has shown that babies are born with the ability to connect with others, not just to meet their basic needs.

Music plays a big role in this connection. Along with Stephen Malloch, a researcher in psychoacoustics, Trevarthen developed the theory of communicative musicality, which shows that baby talk, or early conversations, has musical qualities. Using these theories, Dr. Natalie Alexandra Tse, the founder of LittleCr3atures®, created a programme where babies can freely play and explore the sounds of different objects.

The key to this programme is the interaction between babies and their adults. Babies form their first social bonds with their primary caregivers. By experiencing sounds together, babies feel comfortable and secure, which encourages them to explore on their own over time.

The programme includes:

- Free play and exploration

- Bonding and interaction between adults and children

- Learning about sounds through play, focusing on qualities like rhythm and storytelling, as described in the theory of communicative musicality

Parents and babies can expect:

- A programme structure with flexibility for babies' needs

- Repetition to build comfort and security, leading to active exploration and creative play

- Live music performances and interaction with artist-educator-research Dr. Nat, who will play the guzheng, ukulele and occasionally introduce other instruments as surprises

Each session is designed to help you and your baby vocalize, move, and play together, creating joyful and meaningful sonic experiences.

About the Artist(s)

Natalie Alexandra Tse (dr.) plays with sound, sonic objects, and the environment. Curious about the ancient past but eager to find a place in the contemporary, she uses experimental techniques on the guzheng, strings, and other found objects to evoke emotions in sonic performance. A mother to three children, she integrates her passion in sound with early childhood education and research.  She is the SonicPlay™ Pedagogue and Atelierista at Trehaus school, and the co-founder of Singapore arts organisation SAtheCollective. She refines her artistic practice through research and education as LittleCr3atures®.
