Programme Content

Gerak ABC! is a bilingual English-Malay dance theatre performance, animating the letters of the alphabet through the body. The dancers help make the letter come alive through embodying the letters and pairing them with simple movements words; like "gerak", which means "move". Daily interactions like "M for Makan" and "S for sayang" are also featured and become inspiration for dance movement and engagement between audience and performers.

This programme is designed for children to enjoy wordplay and creative movement. Children who already know Malay might enjoy the show because of the familiar words and sounds, while children who don't already know the language can get interested in it. Children may participate during the performance by clapping and singing along, and embodying the shapes of the letters from where they are seated. Some children may be invited to participate in the performance area.

Gerak ABC! is the second production of our language-based programmes which now also includes Letters Come Alive! and Soul Letters Asaivugal (அசைவுகள). Our language-based programmes are designed for children to enjoy wordplay and creative movement about language, including Malay and Tamil – even if it is not their mother tongue. By embodying and creating letters/vowels from each language, children can marvel both at the wonders of the human body and the language, and see how the world can be full of different ways of communicating and being together.

About the Artist(s)

Rolypoly Family created GERAK ABC! in collaboration with theatre director Dalifah Shahril and performers Syimah Sabtu and Nurul Elyana Binte Hamlan, who helped to shape with elements of language and culture to include. An online version of the show was presented by The Artground and brought to the Toa Payoh community through the arts@SAFRA home series during the pandemic. Subsequently, Rolypoly Family and The Artground brought 'live" show to Asian Festival of Children's Content 2023 (organised by Singapore Book Council) and was invited to Corporation Primary School to perform for the Primary 1 cohorts in 2023 and 2024.

Rolypoly Family is a team of dance artists who value body positivity and respect, gender equality and social inclusion. Led by artists Faye Lim and Bernice Lee, they run dance and body-based programmes and projects for diverse children and families,
