Professional Development Workshop for Adults (by Sensorium Theatre)

Sensorium Theatre is Australia’s only performance company making live shows specially designed for children with disabilities. They are the incredible mastermind behind Oddysea, an interactive multi-sensory performance developed for audience with additional needs.

Sensorium Theatre is offering a special 2-day workshop for professional learning opportunities in delivering effective and engaging communication/performance to persons with disabilities.

If you are an artist, teacher, educational assistant, parent and carer of persons with disabilities, this workshop is for you!

“We use the word multi-sensory all the time – but I don’t think I really understood what that meant until today.” Gladys Newton, Teacher

“Just shows you what their life must be like – like taking a walk in their shoes. College Row, Teacher

Participants of the workshop will:

• Conduct a self-audit on how many senses they are currently engaging their child/student/audience
• Understand what it means to fully engage the senses by experiencing temporary sensory impairment with Sensorium’s Sensory Tool Kit
• Engage in anatomical and somatic movement exercises to understand the process of perception, hearing, smelling etc.
• Learn how to prepare young audiences for a performance – understand how knowledge is embedded, the history behind preparatory film resources and digital Apps (e.g. talking   books) and etc.
• Learn methods (e.g. using sensory props) to convey meaning, mood and intention to audiences using all the senses
• Create a short sensory storytelling show for fellow participants and etc.

The workshop will be conducted by Co-Artistic Director of Sensorium Theatre and Oddysea Michelle Hovane, and their senior producer Rachael Whitworth.

The workshop also includes an opportunity to watch Oddysea with audience with additional needs.
